Lot consists of 3 South Carolina buttons excavated at Civil War sites. All 3 use lined fields and show the state Palmetto tree with 2 crossed arrows tied to it and a log at its base, symbolizing a dead British oak, bordered by the state motto, Animis Opibusque Parati (prepared in spirits and resources.) (A) Strong silver wash on face, bright in recesses, muted elsewhere. No backmark. Measures approximately 23mm. Noted on back of plastic case that it was recovered from the east side of McClean's Fd. (B) Same design but with “SC” flanking the Palmetto and brighter Silver wash. Extra Quality backmark. Measures approximately 20mm. (C) Strong remnants of gilt to gilt to face with wear to high points and edge. Seal and motto without SC. Scovill’s backmark. Measures approximately 15mm. CONDITION: All 3 in very good, near excellent excavated condition as shown with good faces. Backs and shanks in place. Backs are dark, but back marks very good. Shank of C bent. Collection number reverse of A.
