Circa 1905 and Made for J.P. Morgan the legendary American financier and banker per "Certificate of Origin" from Atkin Grant & Lang. London built 12 bore game gun with 28" blacked steel barrels. Barrels are fit with 2 - 3/4" chambers, ejectors, smooth, tapered, concave game rib with an off-white front sight bead and white middle bead. Choked left Improved Modified and right Improved Modified. The top of the rib is engraved "HENRY ATKIN (FROM PURDEY'S) 41 JERMYN STREET ST JAMES'S LONDON" and a gold inlay number "4" near breech. Barrel flats show London nitro proofs. Bottoms of both barrels are stamped with the gun's serial number "1785" and "HS". The patina case color hardened bar action sidelock action has been decorated with fine scroll. The lockplates are engraved "HENRY ATKIN" at bar in banner. Bottom of action has matching scroll with "HENRY ATKIN FROM PURDEY'S". The gun's single mechanical trigger is protected by a trigger guard that extends to a full-length bottom strap with matched scroll engraving, the gun's serial number "1785" and "4". Fences have matched scroll engraving which continues over to the top lever. Left side of thumb piece on the top lever is checkered and right side is engraved with matched scroll. The gun is auto safe and the safe slide is finely checkered. The word is "SAFE" is engraved and gold inlaid between the top lever and the safe slide. The actions water table has the gun's serial number, proof marks, and "E.C. HODGES PATENT". The European reddish brown smoky and marbled walnut stock has a semi-smooth checkered English straight hand grip. Buttstock is finely checkered. A matched checkered splinter forend with Anson-type push-button release is engraved on the escutcheon with a gold number "4" inlay. The gun resides in the maker's oak and leather travel case with brass corners, brass disk on outer lid, red lining, black leather "HENRY ATKIN" case label, new selvyt cloth, and cleaning accessories. CONDITION: Very Good. Barrels retain 85% bluing with some usage and handling marks along with discoloration on the bottom rib near muzzles and around muzzle edges. Bores are bright. The barrels appear to have been shortened from 30". Action shows a nice patina of its case color and is sound. Trigger works well and ejectors are well timed. Stock is very good with signs of refurbishment. Stock with some handling marks and normal markings from use and age. Forend also with slight appearance of repair, handling and storage marks. Checkering on both is good, but semi-smooth. Nice period piece. (CP)
