The King's Own 4th Regiment of foot embarked for North America in June 1814 for service in the War of 1812 and first saw action at the Battle of Bladensburg in August of 1814. They then participated in the Burning of Washington later in August 1814, as well as the Battle of Baltimore in September 1814. They fought in the infamous Battle of New Orleans in January 1815, as well as the capture of Fort Bowyer in February 1815. The Regiment briefly returned to England in May 1815, before embarking for Flanders a few weeks later to fight at the Battle of Waterloo in June. The large powder horn measures about 16" long across the bow. The top 7/8" of the spout is round, followed by a faceted section and a wide band with engraved rings, then another faceted section. Above the main body, there is a large relief band with engraved rings and the crudely carved name "THO: PYLE SETCH". The professionally engraved portion depicts a large cartouche with a British crown above a lion surrounded by a banner that reads "THE KING'S OWN / REGIMENT / IV". Above is a depiction of lady "Britania" clutching a trident and shield. She is standing in front of the British flag and above is a banner that reads "THE WONDRA STILL BRITANIA RULES THE WAVES". Her eyes or inlaid silver tacks. To her right is a ship and on the left a large peacock. Standing above an elephant with a canopy for riders. The bottom edge is serrated and the wooden pressure-fit plug is now absent. CONDITION: Very good overall with one area burned or defaced on name band. Retains a pleasing light honey patina. Some minor losses to serrated edge at bottom. A very nice British regimental powder horn. DMG
