Stevens Model 54 Schuetzen Special made by J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company circa 1897/1898. Very early Stevens-Pope marked barrel, "402", original length 31" barrel with Pope Style 8 land and groove right-hand twist rifling commonly referred to as Ross Rifling by many knowledgeable Stevens collectors. F.C. Ross was Mr. Pope's assistant in the Stevens-Pope specialty department and Pope's shooting partner while they employed by Stevens. No. 3 weight octagon barrel with interchangeable globe front sight with no rear seat and is marked on top barrel flat "STEVENS-POPE MANUFACTURED BY THE J. STEVENS ARMS AND TOOL COMPANY CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A.". Casehardened "44" action with nearly full coverage of Steven's distinctive scroll engraving with vignette and semi-circle border pattern. Stevens Schuetzen double set triggers, with Stevens Model 54 lever with walnut inserts and serial numbered to the action and Stevens tang sight. Checkered walnut, straight grip Model 54 buttstock with cheekpiece and correct Model 54 buttplate. Checkered 2-screw forearm drilled for a palm rest. CONDITION: 90% original blue with action having 10% case colors with balance fading to a silvery gray. Wood has 90% original varnish with usage dings and scratches. Excellent bore with slight shooting wear and good mechanics. DLM/Gary Quinlan
