Winchester Model 1885 deluxe Highwall Schuetzen Model made by Winchester Repeating Arms Company shipped February of 1907. 27 - 7/8" blued Winchester No. 4 half octagon barrel with Winchester fillers in the front and rear sight dovetails, fitted with a Stevens 368 telescope. Cody Research states this rifle originally had a No. 3, 30", octagon barrel, caliber .32-40. Research also states this rifle was returned for repair on May 1907. Proofed pistol grip action with Schuetzen double style set triggers, spur lever, with Winchester address on upper tang. Winchester Schuetzen stock with cheekpiece, checkered pistol grip, fitted with a Helm buttplate. Matching walnut checkered forearm with ebony inlay fitted with a Winchester palm rest base. This gun shows a number of period alterations including a replaced Winchester No.4 weight octagon barrel, having been turned to a part round configuration, the right side wall of the action has been professionally lowered for ease in loading; the action also has been converted, possibly by Winchester with a rimfire ejector spring and the hammer has been converted to a coil spring, Winchester Palm rest base and stem with period replaced wood. CONDITION: 85% thinning barrel blue. Action retains 85% finish with a brown patina finish. Buttplate has been nicely reblued . The round portion of barrel has an overall plum-brown appearance. 90% original stock varnish with handling and usage marks. Bright bore showing noticeable shooting wear and some roughness, good mechanics with telescope lenses in need of cleaning and front mount clamping screw needs replacement.
