Stevens Pope Model 44 - 1/2 action by the J. Stevens Arms and Tool Company, Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts circa 1903 to 1915. Blued 28" octagon heavy barrel measuring 1 -1/16" across the muzzle. Caliber .33-40, with Pope's classic 8 lands and groove left-hand twist rifling, and was originally fitted for a false muzzle (missing). Barrel is marked "STEVENS-POPE, MANUFACTURED BY THE J. STEVENS ARMS AND TOOL CO. CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. U.S.A." additionally the bottom flat of barrel beneath the forend is stamped with Stevens matching tang serial number "46122". Barrel has Stevens interchangeable globe front sight and no rear sight seat and Lyman telescope blocks. Case colored 44 - 1/2 pistol grip action with Schuetzen double set triggers, Stevens windgauge adjustable Vernier tang sight, nickel-plated Stevens-Pope spur lever. Walnut checkered pistol grip Pope Model stock with cheekpiece and nickel-plated Stevens Model 54 buttplate. Matching Stevens deluxe checkered 2-screw forend (1 screw missing) , drilled for a Stevens-Pope palm rest. CONDITION: 90% original barrel blue with edge and corner wear. Action with 95% vivid original case coloring, the Stevens-Pope lever and buttplate retain approximately 95% of their original nickel finish. The stocks retain approximately 90% original varnish with the wrist having been repaired at some point in time. The barrel may have been set back, possibly in the Stevens-Pope Department.
