Sharps Model 1874 "A" Series Sporting rifle with a serial number of 200168 made by Sharps Rifle Company, Bridgeport, Connecticut circa the early 1880's. These guns were made from leftover percussion parts and sometimes shipped to dealers like Carlos Gove and J.P. Lower. Gun has blued 30" octagon barrel which measures 1" across muzzle flats. Marked "OLD RELIABLE" and Bridgeport address, with German silver sheared blade front sight and adjustable flip-up graduated rear sight. Barrel is stamped along forestock on left side "CAL 45 2 - 6/10". Barrel is stamped "168" under forearm. Case hardened action with ground unmarked lockplate with left side of action having an "A" in an octagon. Gun is equipped with double set triggers and tang Vernier sight. Walnut stock with old percussion style iron patchbox. Buttplate is nickel-plated(?). Walnut splinter forearm with Sharp's lip. Flaydermann says only around 700 of these guns were made. CONDITION: 60% fading barrel blue with 10% fading case colors. Wood has traces of original oil finish with forearm having a chunk of wood missing at base and a crack going up from rear forearm screw. Wood has normal dings and gouges from hard use. Good bore and mechanics. An interesting gun. DLM
