Circa 1947. A .410 bore hammer gun with 28" blacked steel dovetail barrels. The barrels are chambered for 2 - 1/2" chambers with extractors. Barrels are fit with a tapered smooth concave game rib with a steel front bead. The right barrel reads "WATSON BROS" and the left barrel reads "7. BURY STREET. ST JAMES'S. LONDON.". The barrel flats show appropriate Birmingham proof and re-proof marks with serial number "18820" engraved on bottom of the left barrel. Chokes are Improved Cylinder and Skeet. The handsome case color hardened action has peninsula locks, double triggers, and checkered top leaver for thumb. The actions water table with Birmingham proof marks. The action is border engraved with "WATSON BROS" on each lockplate. The light brownish-red finished walnut stock features a traditional straight hand grip with English flat top checkering, vacant stock oval, and a scored plastic buttplate. English straight hand grip protected by a full length border engraved tang which has the serial number of the gun "18820" engraved on it. Splinter snap forend with border engraved steel tip and forend diamond. Exterior iron metal is border engraved. Interior iron metal is case color hardened and the interior of the wood has serial number. Gun resides in a brown canvas travel case with paper STEPHEN GRANT & JOSEPH LANG LTD trade label which includes "INCORPORATING ... WATSON BROS..." along with other makes owned by them during the period that this gun was made. The case contains cleaning tools. CONDITION: Good. Barrels retain 80% of black and bores are bright. Engraving of the serial number on the bottom of the left barrel appears to have been done at a later date. Action is sound. Triggers are crisp and extractor functions. Forend with an approximately 1/8" long and 1/16" wide hole in the wood caused from the forend loop on the barrel. Stock and forend have benefited from a refresh and show minor handling marks. The buttplate has two small chips. Case is good. A nice light and quick handling gun. (CP)
