German vertical block action Schuetzen rifle in 8.15x46R. Barrel is marked "2.22" (date of proof), "639" (proof house serial number), "7.7mm","742", with the standard "BUG" proofs. The serial number "742" is on the barrel and front of receiver. No import marks. Octagonal blued matted barrel has the proper front sight, with a removable blade. Barrel has the 11mm sight grooves. Target diopter sight with large disc is mounted on the rear tang and is fully adjustable. Adjustment key is included. Receiver, trigger guard, and floor plate assembly have case hardening and light engraving. High quality walnut stock has checkering. Walnut forearm. Butt plate is of the standard Schuetzen style. Sling swivels are mounted on the barrel and stock. This rifle was brought home from World War II by a veteran whose 1972 dated affidavit was provided by the consignor. The veteran stated as they were approaching a river (possibly the Rhine River) they came upon a small town and received rifle fire from a sniper, who had killed several GIs he was with. Eventually, the GI spotted the sniper, who he then killed. Locals informed the GI that the deceased sniper was a skilled shooter from the local gun club (Schuetzenverein), and was found with this rifle and some additional ammunition. Some very light damage was done to the rear of the stock (small chips). There is a shooting club sticker on the left rear of the stock, but the club could not be identified. CONDITION: Rifle is overall excellent and retains 85-90% of its original blued finish, and approximately 65% of its case hardening with light freckling. Stock has a couple of minor chips, stock has been postwar varnished, and approximately 1/2" of the bottom of the right-side thumb rest is missing. Bore is bright, rifle is mechanically sound, other than the set triggers do not function properly. WEZ
