Springfield Model 1898 bolt action carbine. Made 1898. This started life as a rifle and was modified into carbine variation sometime later. Standard markings on the left side of the receiver. Round steel barrel cut back to 21". 1903 rear style front sight with a short blade and 1901 pattern rear sight. Rear sight has been moved back to just in front of the receiver. Metal components have been re-blued. Bolt has been nickeled. Stock has been cut back to just before the rear band. A lacquered finish has been applied and checkering added to the wrist. A spacer has been added to the butt, with a flat metal butt plate. CONDITION: Metal retains 70% of its original finish with wear and some light freckles of surface rust on the barrel and receiver. Stock has handling marks and scratches. Bore is frosted but retains strong rifling. Mechanically fine.
