Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor single shot rifle. Made 1878. Standard markings on the breech block. "V / P / (Eagle's Head)" proof on the barrel. "R" marked on the left side of the rear sight. No visible cartouche on the left side of the stock. Circled "P" firing proof on the wrist of the stock. Blade front sight with rear ladder adjustable to 1100 meters. "US/27" marked on the top of the butt plate. Metal finishes look to be original. Stock has an aftermarket lacquered finish. Smooth metal butt plate. CONDITON: Metal retains little of its original finish, with most areas having been cleaned and polished. Some gray patina is starting to form in areas. Stock has handling marks, dents and scratches. Bore is frosted with good overall rifling. Tight hammer and good lock up on the breech block. JWA
