Circa 1930. A pair of English made sidelock "London Best" shotguns consisting of a (A) 12 gauge and (B) 20 gauge guns. The 12 (A) gauge is fit with 30" chopper lump nitro proof blacked steel barrels that are built with ejectors, 3" chambers, and are choked Full and Full. The tapered smooth concave game rib is fit with a steel front bead sight. Top of the right barrel reads "OGDEN SMITHS & HUSSEY LTD 62 ST JAMES' STREET LONDON SW1" while the left barrel reads "MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTHS FLUID COMPRESSED STEEL". Underside of the barrels have the gun's serial number "1056", a circle that has leaves on the top and bottom, "GL" and "OS&H" while the barrel flats have appropriate London nitro proofs. The 20 gauge (B) comes with both the original 28" chopper lump nitro proof black steel barrels and a new replacement 28" chopper lump black steel barrels. Both barrels are built with ejectors and 2 - 3/4" chambers. The original barrels are choked Full and Full while the replacement barrels are fit with interchangeable choke tubes. Both barrels have tapered smooth concave game ribs that are fit with a steel bead front sight. Original barrels top right barrel reads "OGDEN SMITHS & HUSSEY LTD 62 ST JAMES' STREET LONDON SW1" while the left barrel reads "MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTHS FLUID COMPRESSED STEEL". Underside of the barrels have the guns serial number "1054", a circle that has leaves on the top and bottom, "GL" and "OS&H" while the barrel flats have appropriate London nitro proofs. The replacement barrels on the barrel flats read "20ga", "1054", 2 3/4" and "MJE 2008". The case color finished actions with double triggers (fronts articulated), gold line cocking indicators are profusely engraved with rose bouquets and scrolls, "OGDEN SMITHS & HUSSEY LTD" on the lockplates, "IMPERIAL EJECTOR" on bottom of the action bodies, beaded and engraved fences, engraved blacked top levers with checkered thumbpieces. "SAFE" in gold on the top tangs ahead of the engraved and checkered safe slides. The guns are auto-safe. The triggers are protected by blacked scroll engraved trigger guards extending to long bottom straps with scrolls and each gun's respective serial number "1056" (A) and "1054" (B) engraved. The reddish-brown English walnut stocks with smoky streaks are furnished with 2 fine checkered panels, drop points, and an English straight hand grip. Buttstocks are also fit with vacant gold ovals and orange Silvers style rubber recoil pads. Splinter forends with fine checkering and Anson-style push-button releases. Iron metal is engraved scrolls and interior metals are blacked with their respective serial numbers. The guns come with an oak and leather case with brass corners, burgundy interior, paper business card for "MR. H. H. HUSSEY" with "S. H. du Pont Wilmington Del" in black ink affixed to top interior lid and cleaning tools. CONDITION: (A) Very Good. Barrels with approximately 85% original black. Some silvering at muzzles and handling marks are present. Action, ejectors, and triggers are sound. Barrels are tight. 90% original case color finish remain. Bottom tang with rubbed-off blackening from use. Stock with handling and storage marks including bruises on top left horn of buttstock and small shakes behind lockplates. Forend appears to have benefited from a light refurbishment with minor handling/storage marks. (B) Good. Original barrels with approximately 40% original black. Silvering at muzzles, rub marks from forend, heavy orange peel ahead of chambers lightening as progressing up the barrels and a dent in left barrel approximately 5" from muzzles at 9 O'clock position. Ejectors are sound and the barrels are loose. Replacement barrels with approximately 75% black remaining. Silvering at muzzles, rub marks from forend, and handling/storage. Ejectors are sound and the barrels are tight. 30% original case color finish remain. Bottom tang, trigger guard, and top lever with rubbed-off blackening from use. Action is sound. Stock with handling/storage marks, crack around wrist starting right side at trigger plate extending to rear of lockplate and continuing onto left side trigger plate, flattened checkering from use at grip and hardened rubber recoil pad. Forend with flattened checkering from use, cracked and chipped interior wood near action and forend diamond screw snapped in two, interior metal surface with freckling and handling/storage marks. Case can benefit from relining the interior. (CP)
