Built circa 1855. With maker's confirmation this heavy duck gun was ordered by an American businessman by the name of Mr. W. Sturgis Hooper in 1854 (August) and delivered less than a year later in May of 1855. This vintage and handsome smooth 7 bored shotgun with 40" brown Damascus steel barrels. Barrels are nicely fit with a wide concave rib that tapers slightly at muzzle. Rib reads "J.PURDEY. 314 1/2 OXFORD STREET, LONDON.". Chokes are Cylinder and Cylinder. Barrels and under rib with loops for ramrod. The dark reddish-brown English walnut stock with sharply checkered straight handgrip is fit with a scroll engraved steel buttplate and small silver oval bearing the initials "WSH" in fancy script. The dog-eared case color hardened scroll engraved hammered action that can be set to half-cock is finely engraved with Ducks at pond and flying is fit with double triggers; front being serrated and rear is smooth. Action reads "PURDEY" at top of both lock plates. Double triggers are protected by a Game scene and border scroll engraved trigger guard which extends to a full-length scroll engraved bottom strap also engraved with the gun's serial number "5006". Gun's forend is with matched checkering, cross pin release, and under channel for fitting of ramrod. Ramrod (possibly ebony) with brass caps at ends. CONDITION: Very good. Barrels with some handling marks and faded brown. Hammers function properly. Triggers are strong. Action with slightly proud locks. Stock with numerous light handling marks and steel buttplate is slightly proud. Forend good with bruise to checkering at crosspin location. Nice vintage piece! CP
