Type 1 Springfield Model 1875 Officer's single shot rifle, one of approximately 125 manufactured between 1875-1877. 26" round barrel chambered in .45-70 Government with Vernier tang sight, adjustable leaf rear sight graduated to 1100 yards, and globe type front sight. Left of barrel is marked with typically seen "V" / "P" / "(eagle's head)" proof. Lock is marked with "U.S." / "SPRINGFIELD" / "1873" with a US Armory Eagle to its immediate left. Receiver, breech block, lock, hammer, and tang are all armory engraved with floral and scroll engraving. Nicely figured checkered walnut stock complete with Circle P proof mark below checkering, silver-plated barrel band, nickel-plated and engraved forearm cap, and military-type buttplate engraved on top tang near heel of stock. Silver-plated trigger guard. No cartouche present. Complete with wooden cleaning rod with nickel-plated ends. CONDITION: Excellent, with barrel retaining an attractive amount of the original bluing with scattered age-related light pitting throughout. Case hardened parts are a dull grey patina with faint traces of original color visible in extremely protected areas with light age-related pitting throughout. Set trigger is not functioning, but does function when unset. Stock fits well and is original with scattered handling marks throughout but no major signs of distress. Action is tight and crisp. Bore is bright with sharp rifling and modest abrasion toward muzzle. An extremely rarely encountered rifle worthy of a fine trapdoor or single shot target rifle collection. TON
