This large and early American powder horn measures about 14-1/2" across the bow. Captain Ebenezer Warner, MD was born in 1677 in Farmington, Hartford, Connecticut Colony. He died in 1755 and is buried I. Litchfield, Connecticut. He was a physician in the Roxbury section of Woodbury. To keep him in the town and deter him from traveling, he was granted 60 acres to remain there to treat the locals exclusively. In 1724, during an Indian attack, Lt. Ebenezer Warner was appointed to raise a scout the defense of the frontiers of the town. He was successful and he paid the men that he enlisted for service. Warner's son, Benjamin, was the father of Col. Seth Warner of Revolutionary War fame. The horn itself has a dark green hue and is inscribed "EBENEZER WARNAR 1744" within a large cartouche with crosshatched border. The conical spout section has a ring at the tip followed by a relief ring farther down. The flat wooden plug is carved with the initials "EW" in the center and is retained by a series of wooden pins. Towards the plug is an iron ring, which appears to be from a French Model 1728 Charleville musket. CONDITION: Horn shows scattered marks from use, spout section has one triangle shaped chip on the back and a hairline fracture. Otherwise very good and untouched. American horns dated this early are extremely rare. A very good identified early Connecticut powder horn. DMG
