Possibly southern, this rifle features an octagon barrel with front and rear sight mounted on top flat. The top flat is inscribed "J.K." The replaced lock is extensively engraved with foliate scrolls and is signed "Levirk". The brass furniture includes a large and ornate 4-piece patchbox with scroll-engraved lid and 7 piercings. There is also a saddle wear plate and a brass 8-point star above cheekpiece. There is an brass oval wrist escutcheon with tooled border. The rifle features double set triggers. CONDITION: Barrel retains a spotted brown patina with some corrosion at breech. The replaced lock appears too be in its original flintlock configuration and frizzen has been sleeved. Brass retains a pleasing untouched dark patina. Cheekpiece inlay is absent, triggerguard has a period repair. Toeplate is absent and there is a piece of wood replaced at the toe. Stock shows heavy use with scattered splintering, marks from use, repairs, and losses along forend, some restoration around lock. An interesting and attractive signed rifle. DMG
