Japanese Type 30 "Hook Safety" bolt action rifle. Made at Koshikawa arsenal circa 1898-1905 before the adoption of the type 38. Large numbers of these rifles were purchased by the British in early 1914, during the spin-up period for production of the SMLE. This rifle has the correct Japanese sale mark (3 balls over the chrysanthemum, relinquishing Imperial possession), and "S/106404" "1131/G2D" British markings. Crisp chrysanthemum on the chamber, above the model markings. No import marks found. Mismatched serial numbers. Standard blade front sight with rear ladder adjustable to 2,400 meters. Military blued finish turning to a brown patina. Stock has a light oil finish. Original smooth finish metal butt plate. CONDITION: Metal retains 70% of its original finish with most areas turning to a brown patina. Stock has numerous dings, scratches, and dents. Bore is frosted with good overall rifling. Mechanically fine. JWA
CORRECTION: This is a very rare World War I era Japanese manufactured Arisaka taken into British Navy service.
