Victorian era British Pattern 1895 army officer's sword. Only produced for two years, the pattern 1895 sword was replaced with the pattern 1897 sword, which remains as the regulation sword for the British Army. The main difference is between the two patterns is that the Pattern 1897 sword has the inner edge of the guard turned down in order to avert excessive wear to the officer's uniform. The blade is etched with foliate scrolls, a rayed crown, and the royal coat of arms over crossed laurel and palm fronds. The etched decorations are followed by the ricasso, which is marked "E. Thurkle / Maker / Soho / London". The steel half basket guard features pierced foliate scrollwork which leads up to the cypher of Queen Victoria. The scaled grip is wire bound and features a knurled back strap that is topped with a domed oval pommel. Completing the sword is the nickel plated steel scabbard featuring two ring mounts. CONDITION: The blade remains bright and exhibits scattered blemishes. The guard exhibits areas of finish loss and tarnishing but also remains bright. A few strands of the wire around the grip have come loose. The scabbard exhibits finish loss and pitting in several areas. Overall good. JLD
