This rifle is attributed to Jacob Sees of Elizabeth Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In lieu of carving, this rifle had brass and silver wire inlaid designs on the left side of the buttstock and both sides of the wrist. This decoration is known on a couple other examples signed by Sees. The octagon barrel is unsigned and has a front brass sight and notched rear sight. The blacksmith-made lock is unmarked. The brass furniture includes a four-piece unengraved patchbox. The figured maple stock is of Lancaster form and once had a large display of inlaid scrolls on the left side of the buttstock, on both sides of the wrist, and on both sides of the ramrod entry ferrule. Now, only one small scroll of the brass wire inlay remains. Complete with a period hickory ramrod. CONDITION: Barrel and lock have been chemically cleaned and now retain a grey patina with pitting overall. Touch hole has been re-bushed. Brass has also been chemically cleaned and is freckled from acid burn. Stock shows a heavy shellac and has losses along barrel on both sides, as well as a section missing at the muzzle, nosecap is absent. An attractive Lancaster Golden Age rifle with very nice form. DMG
