This unusual rifle is probably southern. The unsigned octagonal barrel features a brass front blade sight and a notched rear sight. The lock has some decoration at tail and features a roller-frizzen. The brass furniture includes a very unusual four-piece patchbox set in from the butt and with a horizontal-opening rectangular lid. The patchbox has a few deeply engraved scrolls and deeply scalloped borders, it is retained by eight screws. Other brass furniture includes a buttplate, triggerguard, sideplate escutcheons, ramrod ferrules, nose cap and diamond-shaped barrel key escutcheons. The highly figured tiger maple stock features a checkered wrist and a rectangular panel of checkering below the relief cheekpiece. There is a whimsical incise-carved scroll design with deep fluting behind the cheekpiece. CONDITION: Barrel has been shortened during period of use and there is an unfilled sight dovetail in front of the existing sight. Some heavy marring and corrosion at breech and touchhole. Lock has been replaced and is in its original flintlock configuration, brown patina with markings in center intentionally removed. Brass furniture retains a pleasing dark mustard patina. Just over 22" of the forend have been replaced along with a couple long thin slivers farther back and one above front tang of lockplate. There is a large chip missing on each side of barrel tang. An unusual rifle with attractive form. DMG
