Round iron barrel with brass blade front sight, signed on left side with "No 5 E" (5 and E are indistinct and may have originally had additional characters, No is clear and in the style known on Danish pistols). Offset inverted "HS" proof in lozenge, while top of barrel with Frederick V royal cypher, and "12", probably a rack number as it is repeated throughout the pistol. Rounded banana lock with bevelled edges and teat at rear with IPK lozenge for Johan Peter Kreilow (Helsingor, Denmark, circa 1760-1788) visible under frizzen spring. With the combination of Kreilow's working dates and Frederick's death, this pistol can be comfortably dated between 1760 and 1766. Swan neck cock and unbridled pan. Tailed trigger with brass trigger guard with light engraving and arrowhead finial. Iron tipped ramrod, probably the original, retained by a single ferrule feeding into a reinforced mouth with light line engraving. Distinct birdshead grip with brass buttcap marked "12", brass thumbpiece of Frederick V monogram, serpentine sideplate with "12" in brass and "12" stamp repeated in wood. CONDITION: Excellent, as found, with a wonderful look. Metal looks to have been cleaned once in the European style long ago with some areas of darkness. Legends are crisp (excepting the 5 E proof aforementioned), particularly the Kreilow proof. Some minor delamination in the metal that does not detract on lock and cock. Wood is excellent with some marks from handling and use, with some rubbing to the finish to lighter wood. Right side of stock with a small crack. EMW
