Raithel is recorded working in Schorndorf circa 1845. Clearly manufactured as a pair with "1" and "2" engraved on tangs and identical features. Barrels are in an unusual over/under configuration with the over barrel rifled and the under barrel smoothbore, diminutive blade front sights mounted to top of barrel, notch rear sights mounted to tangs. Fish form hammers engraved with floral scroll and incorporating a rather clever rotating safety that, when engaged, prevents the hammer from falling onto the nipple. Back action percussion locks decorated with scroll on site, and marked "Schorndorf" on left lock, "Raithel" on right lock. Stiff leaf engraving in a band between locks and barrels. Double triggers protected by trigger guard with finger spur. Fluted walnut one piece grips, buttcaps engraved en suite with balance of mounts. Housed in a walnut case with brass plaque engraved "D.H", lined in purple, and French fitted to fit both pistols and accessories comprising a combination bullet mold and sprue cutter, loader and mallet tool, 3 recesses with percussion caps, lead projectiles, patches, and small brass cap. CONDITION: Metal has been polished in the typical European fashion with visible darkness and some areas of delamination. Locks and cocks cleaned en suite but somewhat darker than barrels and may be an older polish. Stocks are very good with marks throughout but free of cracks or chips. One pistol trigger guard is not anchored correctly at rear and spins freely. Case is very good, relined, with lining peeling in a few spots. Accessories are very good with some signs of use. A neat pair. EMW
