1853 vintage Colt 1849 Pocket percussion revolver, serial number 84301. 4" octagon barrel in .31 caliber rifled with cone front sight, desirable hand-engraved "SAML COLT" script barrel address, and hammer notch rear sight. 1-piece plain walnut grips. About 3/4 coverage factory hand engraved by Colt Master Engraver Gustave Young with his foliate arabesque scroll on a punchdot background accented by his famous depiction of a dog's head on the left side barrel flat near wedge screw, wrigglework on trigger guard, and wolf's head on either side of hammer. Cylinder is roll die engraved with standard stagecoach cylinder scene. Rear side of through screws are all engraved with small starbursts. Matching serial numbers observed on barrel, frame, trigger guard, and butt. Revolver is complete with a period oak partition case with red cloth interior, an Eley marked cap tin, bullet mold, and powder flask. CONDITION: Good, with virtually all of the original finishes turned a grey patina with scattered minor handling and storage marks throughout. Engraving is sharp and cylinder scene is faint but visible. Grips are slightly shy to frame at top near frame rear. Mechanically fine. Bore is frosted with well-defined rifling and abrasion throughout from period use with corrosive black powder. An example of factory engraving by a true master. TON
