Very nice, standard configuration Union army forage cap complete with chinstrap, sweatband, full lining bearing paper label of Murphy and Griswold, well known Civil War uniform contractors. Dark blue wool body. Leather visor. Thin leather two-piece chinstrap with friction buckle, secured by two small infantry-I buttons. Complete sweatband and brown polished cotton lining. M&G / No. 3 / N.Y. label intact. Descended from M1851 shakos with linings removed or permitted to soften, these became standard issue for fatigue wear in 1858. This is the quintessential piece of Civil War headgear, issued to every army enlisted man of all branches of service throughout the war and key part of the field uniform. CONDITION: Very good. Two minor pencil point moth nips on edge of crown; one at base concealed by chinstrap. Color very good. Visor and sweatband secure with minor wear spots. Lining complete. Chinstrap in place. Side buttons likely restitched. A key piece in any Civil War collection and hard to find in decent condition.
