C. mid 19th century. Made by Thomas W. Mason, marked on engine "Thomas W. Mason, Philadelphia". A very special engine, as it was produced in the very beginning of the vertical inverted steam engine era, used up until the 1920's and 1930's. Thomas W., along with his father and brothers, were instrument makers in Philadelphia and belonged to the Philadelphia Philosophical Society. Thomas W. was also listed as a model maker. The vertical inverted engine revolutionized steam-powered ships. Comes with some historical paperwork. It is very intricately made of brass. One piece of tubing has been soldered.
