1923, GERMANY: The Weber company released the first Grandezza orchestrion in 1920 and it became their best selling product during the 1920's, followed by the Weber Unika, also selling in this auction. The instrument features keyboard style piano with mandolin attachment and a 20 note repeating xylophone. Built by the famous Weber Bothers of Waldkirc, Germany, nestled in the Black Forest, home to some of the worlds best craftsmen, beautiful walnut cabinet with applied carvings and columns. Beveled mirrors adorn the front doors, and the xylophone can be seen through the window at the top, giving the Grandezza an extra element of entertainment. A point of difference in Weber music roll arrangements may be noted. The Weber control registers constantly change. The xylophone may be brought into play for just a few notes, then remain silent until it sounds again to accent a passage or play a realistic solo...to achieve an almost human performance. CONSIDERATIONS: This instrument is in excellent condition, the internal mechanics are pristine, and the cabinet has very little wear. Currently playing beautifully. Weber was known for their strikingly beautiful sound and this example lives up to that distinction. Includes 1 music roll.
