1925, FRANCE: This amazing orchestrion with animated figures was made by J. Bodson of Paris, France, in the 1920's. The accordion player was made in the likeness of famed Italian jazz artist Tino Rossi, with an accompanying drummer/percussionist. From the original advertising flyer of J. Bodson, "Their heads, eyes, eyebrows, lips, arms, hands, fingers, feet, by their graceful movements, give the perfect illusion of a human face always smiling." Working from pneumatic rolls, the black man playing the drums is Mr. Jimson of Martinique, his movements really play the drums, and cymbal and operated from air. Tino plays a genuine Italian accordion of the first brand. It folds and unfolds automatically and its keys function pneumatically. The air, exactly nuanced, passes through the real blades. Tino's other movements including eyes, fingers and hands is through a series of metal strings connected to a cam operated by electric motor. Bodson made these orchestrions to be sold or rented to local establishments for entertainment. Less than five are known to exist, and this is the only known example with all original clothing, wood stand, and accordion. CONSIDERATIONS: This is a remarkable survivor. The original clothing shows its age with light fading and some tattered seams, but overall the unit has great eye appeal. The wooden stand is original, the lattice work attached to the back was added for dimension, and has lots of postcards from around Italy attached. The automation was updated at some point and works perfectly. Sound is brisk and bright, and comes with several rolls. Quite possibly the most original surviving example in ready-to-play condition. A rare opportunity to acquire one of the best! Includes 4 music rolls. From the collection Werner Straub.
