1895, GERMANY: From 1890 to 1930, the firm of Fritz Wrede manufactured fairground organs. Those made from 1890 to 1900 were of the barrel-operated variety. In addition to the large fairground organs, Wrede also manufactured many smaller portable hand crank organs, of which this is one. Called the "Hamonipan". This very small crank organ has 25 keys, a wonderful original cart with hold down leather, and a beautiful inlaide burl and mixed woods cabinet. Mistakenly referred to as a monkey organ, these portables were usual strapped around a performers neck with a large leather strap, and they would find a busy street corner and perform for change. CONSIDERATIONS: the cabinet is stunning with the inlay and exposed pipes. The cart has decorative leaves of tin around the boarder that gives the organ a wonderful look. Plays beautifully and was recently tuned.
