1900, FRANCE: This automata was made by L. Valery of Paris sometime at the turn of the century. Original dry cell battery operation, later converted to electricity, this phenomenal automaton consists of a Lion dressed in Victorian clothing holding a sword. There is a rocking chair as well as a street light present. The title placed on the box in blue paint says "Jouets Etiennes", which loosely translates to "toys store" (Maybe). It is thought that the lion is fighting ghosts with his sword as he addresses a rocking chair in motion without anybody in the seat. Composite construction to the head and hands, glass eyes and oak stand. The rocking chair and street light a wrought iron. CONSIDERATIONS: Currently this piece is not working as intended. The movements if working would be the rocking chair rocking, Jovet moving his sword arm and also moving his left arm. With working street light. The Lion is in good condition showing just light wear, his two hands will need some attention. This is a wonderful piece of early automata and very worthy of a restoration.
