Zlatoust is well known for being one of the foremost centers of Russian engraving and metalwork, with production as far back as 1815, when Zlatoust was manufacturing edged weapons, including decorated examples. This modern example is a hunting knife with a Damascus straightback blade, decorated on right side with a roaring polar bear on a glacier and accented with floral scroll, while right side is more simply decorated with flowing florals. Sheath is decorated with a pair of enamel paintings, with left side depicting a polar bear in portraiture, while right side depicts a polar bear with a fresh sea lion kill. Both sides are further accented with florals and intricate knotwork on a mixed blackened and gilt ground. Pale wood (Karelian birch?) grip with single finger groove. Pommel is decorated with florals and mixed blackened and gilt ground en suite. Pommel with ball capstan. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining virtually all of the factory finishes, with some very minor marks from sheathing/resheathing. Housed in a wooden presentation case fitted to knife and paper slipcase. Accompanied by Russian Compliance paperwork and a brief description of the knife in Cyrillic. A lovely piece of Russian art. EMW. A portion of the proceeds for this lot will be donated to Samaritan’s Purse in support of Ukraine.
