Zlatoust is well known for being one of the foremost centers of Russian engraving and metalwork, with production as far back as 1815, when Zlatoust was manufacturing edged weapons, including decorated examples. This modern example is a hunting knife with a Damascus recurve blade, decorated on right side with a hawk on a branch which transforms into intricate knotwork and florals. Right side of blade with a short spray of florals on ricasso. Sheath and bolster with extensive floral decoration on a mixed silver and gilt ground, with left side of sheath depicting a hawk pulling a trout out of the water, with silver and white enamel cleverly used to accent the hawk. Right side of sheath also has 15 inlaid gemstones, they appear to be indicolite. Right side of sheath with florals and a central hawk feather motif. Karelian birch grip with finger groove, dyed blue. Pommel in the form of a hawk head with 2 more indicolite gems for eyes. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining virtually all of the factory finishes, with some very minor marks from sheathing/resheathing. Housed in a wooden presentation case fitted to knife and paper slipcase. Accompanied by Russian Compliance paperwork in Cyrillic. A lovely piece of Russian art. EMW. A portion of the proceeds for this lot will be donated to Samaritan’s Purse in support of Ukraine.
