Franklin County Pennsylvania made percussion Kentucky style rifle made circa 1845 by Samuel Miller Shillito of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. 40 -1/2" octagon rifled barrel in .45 caliber, with German silver blade front sight and rear notch sight, signed in script "S.M.Shillito" and stamped by the barrel maker "L&S LUTZ. "H. Elwell WARRANTED" marked original percussion marked lock with double set trigger control. Full curly maple stock with brass hardware including an engraved 4 piece patchbox with heart piercing and spearpoint typical Shillito finial with lid release in toe. Stock also fitted with 10 engraved coin silver inlays with 1 on right forestock being a replacement. Comes with period hardwood ramrod. A nice honest Shillito rifle. CONDITION: Overall excellent with metal having some light surface corrosion and has turned to a brown patina. Brass has possibly been cleaned long ago and has returned to a mellow golden finish. Wood has pleasing original aged look with 2 small cracks around first inlay with 2nd inlay replaced on right side. Dark bore with good mechanics. DLM
