Ca. 1910. Salem, NC. Beautifully oil-painted face with very detailed eyes, nose and mouth, painted short brown brush-stroked hair with center part, rosy cheeks, closed mouth (tiny spot of paint loss on chin). Cloth body with joints at shoulders and hips, cloth is painted overall (one arm is missing). “Maggie Bessie” wears her original slip and panties, stockings and garters. The “Maggie Bessie” dolls were made by the Pfohl Sisters (Maggie & Bessie), two Moravian ladies in Old Salem NC, beginning in 1893. According to recorded sales records that are owned by Old Salem, this particular doll was purchased by Miss Frank Hanes in 1910, a small Size 1 doll for $2.00.Reference: “The Pfohl Sisters and their Maggie Bessie Dolls” by Bradley Justice in November 2006 Antique Doll Collector.
