Probably Suhl, circa 1760-1780, shows French influence. The swamped, deeply rifled octagon barrel features an ornate notched rear sight with long molded finial. Behind the sight, there is a small floral engraving on the top flat. The early European lock is convex and features an unbridled pan. Rifle has double set triggers. Brass furniture includes a Jaeger trigger guard, 3 ramrod ferrules, and a sideplate similar to those found on Suhl-made military Jaegers. Brass buttplate tang features engraving of mining tools, masonic symbols, and axes. The walnut stock is profusely decorated with inlaid and engraved bone. There are relief panels carved around lock and sideplate, as well as designs around trigger guard, ramrod entry ferule, and barrel tang. There is a small relief-carved floral design in front of the large relief cheekpiece. Rifle is complete with its original sliding wooden patchbox lid inlaid with bone en suite. Horn-tipped wooden ramrod appears to be original. CONDITION: Barrel and lock are mostly cleaned bright in the European manner, showing some light freckling. Lock is in its original flintlock configuration, crisp and functioning well. Brass retains a mellow patina, trigger guard has a filled square where swivel stud once was. Stock very good showing scattered minor marks from use and bruising, a couple minor splinters replaced along barrel. Some inlays are repaired or replaced. A very attractive and well-decorated rifle with early form. DMG
