Circa 1909. A German-built 12 bore best grade boxlock ejector with 29 - 1/2" chopper lump blued special Krupp 3-ring steel barrels with a rib extension third bite fastener, fit with ejectors and tapered machined concave game rib with both white front and middle bead sights. The rib reads "J.P. SAUER & SOHN, SUHL" with the J.P. Sauer & Sohn's now-famous "Cave Man" trademark near breech. Top of both barrels rolled stamped "SPECIAL-GEWEHR-LAUF STAHL FRIED. KRUPP, A.G. ESSEN" with 3 interlocking rings. Bottom of the barrels have period German proof marks with "CHAM 2 3/4" added at a later date and serial number "140878". The coin finish scalloped action body is adorned with fine English scrolls with "J.P. SAUER & SOHN, SUHL" on both the left and right sides, fences are carved with foliate scrolls, and engraved top lever with scrolls is checkered on both sides of thumbpiece. Boxlock action features intercepting sears, side clips, concealed cross bolt, side-mounted cocking indicators surrounded by the patent number "D.R.G.M. 130243", automatic safety with "SICHER" engraved just forward of the finely checkered safety slide, and an engraved trigger guard extending to a long engraved bottom strap with serial number protecting the double triggers with front trigger hinged. The classic English straight hand grip reddish-orange European walnut stock with contrasting figure has 2-panel point pattern checkering, vacant golden stock oval, and an engraved steel skeleton plate surrounding a checkered butt. The splinter forend has Anson style push-button release. CONDITION: Very Good. Barrels have handling/use marks and retain 95% blue from recent refresh and bores are bright and shiny. Barrel's bottom rib has 2 filled holes for removed sling swivel. Stock and forend both benefited from recent refresh of the checkering. Buttstock has use and storage marks. The forend has chattered edge on right side and handling/storage marks. Triggers are crisp, barrels tight on face, and ejectors timed well. Beautiful high-quality shotgun by one of the most famous firms in Germany. (CP)
