Conway is recorded as working in Blackfriars between 1821 and 1867. This example has an octagonal applied Damascus barrel with horizontally dovetailed bead front sight and silver line express rear sight. Top flat engraved "CONWAY, BLACKFRIARS, MANCHESTER". Trumpet ramrod with band engraved head is frozen in place, retained by a pair of ferrules that feed into a reinforced mouth with a sling eye on 2nd ferrule. Half stock with horn cap. Barrel retained by a single key with escutcheon engraved. Forearm with point pattern checkering. Pattern breech with platinum blowout engraved with scroll. Elaborate fishform cock with engraved scroll and scales. Stalking safety. Lock engraved with scroll and border work and has "CONWAY" in a playful ribbon. There is a vacant slot for a tang sight on the wrist, which is checkered en suite with forearm. Trigger guard with engraving en suite with the lock, and has an urn finial, engraved en suite. Trigger guard with extended finger grip. Cap box with a vignette of a running deer. Sling eye at toe line. Buttstock with long top strap engraved en suite with balance of gun. CONDITION: Excellent. Barrel with much browning and plenty of applied Damascus visible with some silvering to sharp edges. Horn forearm cap with a split on right side. Forearm has several bumps and pressure marks, with one crack forward of lock. Trigger guard retains much of the English high polish blue with some flaking to edges. Mechanically fine, bore is very good with strong rifling and some pitting in grooves. A highly attractive rifle. EMW
