The 83rd Pennsylvania was a hard-fighting Union infantry regiment recruited in western Pennsylvania and serving in the Fifth Army Corps in the Army of the Potomac where it lost 11 officers, 267 men in killed or mortally wounded alone during its service from September 1861 to July 1865, in battles such as Gaines Mill, Malvern Hill, 2nd Bull Run, Wilderness, Laurel Hill (Spottsylvania), Petersburg, and Gettysburg, where they took part in the defense of Little Round Top. This is a field used, but very good condition, Philadelphia Depot canteen from a western Pennsylvania collection made and marked on the neck by "Hadden, Booth & Porter Phila." These corrugated or "bull's eye" canteens were supplied uncovered to the depot, which covered them from their large supplies of uniform cloth, in this case the same light blue twilled cotton and wool fabric used for infantry trousers. The cover is better than 90% intact with only 1 or 2 small moth holes and has a pleasing uniform muted color showing only some darker rings of staining from the raised ridges underneath. One side is painted in period yellow paint "I" over "83," indicating issue to Company I of the 83rd Pennsylvania. CONDITION: Excellent. Missing the retaining string for the stopper and cloth shoulder sling. Cover shows minor dirt and stains with muted colors. 1 small moth hole over the "8" on one face and a smaller one on the reverse. Seams are intact.
