Lot consists of 2 1860 pattern French infantry shakos as imported under a US 1861 contract for infantry uniforms and equipment with the French firm Godillot. Regiments receiving them included the 18th Mass, 62nd and 83rd PA with subsequent reissue of some gear to other units, including the shakos to bandsmen in the Veteran Reserve Corps. Some shako plates have been excavated in camps of the Excelsior Brigade, indicating at least one of their regiments received them as well. French 1860 pattern, but with US style front plate with eagle, infantry horn, and RWB metal cockade. Black leather, applied inverted-V bands with vent hole, with flat visor. (A) Cap with plate and cockade in place. Sweatband, partial chinstrap inside. CONDITION: Very good. Visor slightly curled. (B) Same configuration. CONDITION: Very good. Plate and rosette in place. Sweatband deteriorated. Chinstrap broken but complete. With these comes a blue/green feather plume that may be original. These uniforms and related gear were awarded by drill competition in 1862.
