German World War II Waffen SS General’s Visor. The visor is constructed of a fine grey doeskin body, which has darkened throughout on the exposed areas, possibly from liquid or oil. The areas of the doeskin under the folds, or near protected areas shows the original true lighter grey color of how the fabric originally appeared. The center band is made of a black crushed velvet which remains tight to the cap and shows no damage. The visor is trimmed with a silver braid piping which designates the General rank in the SS. The silver piping is nicely executed and tight to the visor with no visible damage. The front insignia of the visor is zinc late war SS eagle and skull from the firm of F.A. Assmann. The chin cord is a late war style cello type which has faded slightly in the exposed areas to a tannish color, whereas the protected areas still retain more of their original silver color. The fiber bill of the visor retains most of it’s black exterior paint, with a checkered underside that has what appears to be a control sticker affixed to it. The bill of the visor, and part of the sweatband have become detached from the visor’s body. This is common on visors that have not been stored in climate controlled areas and the construction threads begin to dry rot. The sweatband of the visor is made of thin pigskin, and exhibits natural wear throughout. As mentioned previously the sweatband has become partially detached from the visors body and has torn in half. The visor’s interior is lined with an artificial cream silk, which exhibits natural wear. The lining is loosely attached to the caps interior body as it should be. A celluloid rhomboid sweat shield is sewn to the visors interior lining. The sweat shield has become partially unstitched from the lining and has a small tear. The interior of the visor is completely void of any maker labels, which is what collectors want to see for wartime Waffen SS caps. The SS took over production of their own garments and clothing towards the middle of the war, and therefore were not maker marked or RZM marked any longer. A rare cap to find on the market. CONDITION: Very good to excellent. DMW
