The Evan's line throwing gun was a rather nifty little device that could be used to throw lines from ship to ship, ship to shore, or shore to ship; interestingly, the Evans and Low's patent is mentioned by name in "Wrecks and Reminsicenes of St. Andrews Bay" by George Bruce as being intended to be shot from a ship to shore and demonstrated on September 8th, 1883. Brass front sight, with vacant slot for rear sight. Top of chamber engraved "Evans & Low's / Patent / No 21" with a strike under the "o" in "No". Half stock with finger grooves, iron furniture, and checkered wrist. CONDITION: Good with evidence of time spent at sea. Right side of barrel is dark, probably from being laid in a case, with other half of barrel a pleasing mustard patina. Iron trigger guard and strap is essentially a chocolate patina, while lock and cock just have patches. Butt with more consistent patina. Stock is good with numerous bumps and nicks as expected from a life at sea, with a minor chip at toe. Left side of stock has some kind of lacquer, possibly as a side effect from cleaning. A lovely piece of naval history. EMW
