One of 5,100 made U.S. Model 1840 Flintlock rifles built by D. Nippes Mill Creek, Pennsylvania between 1840 and 1848. 42" round rifled .69 caliber barrels with 2 iron bands and iron double strap nosecap, blade front sight and no rear sight, marked at breech with "U.S. / J.H. / P" and tang dated 1841. Flint lock with correct style brass pan marked "D. NIPPES / U.S." with rear marked "MILL CREEK PA / 1842". Walnut full military stock with iron hardware, EB cartouche and illegible inspector mark. Comes with original steel trumpet style rod. PROVENANCE: Ex. Rich Guckes Collection. CONDITION: Metal retains 80% of original national bright finish, only lightly cleaned. Original lock with conversion using correct parts. Wood has been lightly cleaned with some old burnout around lock from when gun was converted to percussion. Dark bore with good mechanics. DLM
