A rather worn Civil War Model 1860 Cavalry Saber that was recovered from the Gettysburg Battlefield long after the guns of the war fell silent. The sword features a 34" blade and is devoid of any manufacture or inspector markings due to the heavy wear and exposure to the elements. The blade is marked with "Gettysburg 1863" in gold paint which was most likely added as soon as the sword was recovered. The sword is complete and exhibits all of the features, although heavily worn, of an M1860 saber, including the brass guard, grooved leather wrapped wood grip, and brass pommel. The pommel does appear to be stamped "DR" for David Rice, who inspected swords up to 1863. The sword is accompanied by a receipt from the consigner, as well as a letter of authenticity from Heller's antiques, also known as Civil War Antique Shop.com. CONDITION: The blade is heavily worn with chips in the edge and a dulled, flat tip. The paint has faded but remains legible and is stated on the LOA to be approximately 50 plus years old since the time of its drafting in 2011. The brass components of the handle have darkened, and the brass wire, as well as most of the leather has worn off of the wood grip. There is a significant crack in the grip. Relic condition. Despite not being as flashy as a presentation sword, this example still presents well and is an honest Civil War Model 1860 saber that was recovered from perhaps the most famous battle of the war which divided the nation.
