1 of an unknown quantity of Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 1797 Contract muskets built by Daniel Sweitzer, Lancaster, Pennsylvania. 44" smoothbore .69 caliber musket with 2 iron barrel bands, double strap iron nosepiece, and barrel marked at breech. Remnants of "P" under "Liberty Cap" proof. Flintlock "D. SWEITZER" stamped on the inside with "CP" on the outside with lock appearing to be original flint. Lock backplate has "T" or "J" "S" in script with floral design engraved in the center of the plate for unknown reason. Walnut full military stock with iron furniture and original steel cleaning rod. PROVENANCE: Rich Guckes Collection. CONDITION: Metal exhibits a silvery-grey appearance with some areas of corrosion and pitting. Lock appears to be original with plum patina color. Wood has dark reddish appearance with chunk missing between tang and lock and some slivers along the barrel channel. Dark bore with good mechanics. Missing rear sling swivel. DLM
