Dark blue wool jacket with gold bullion tape trim on body and sleeves. Collar secured by hook and eye, designed to be worn open. Black silk body lining with white sleeve linings. Owner suggested a connection with the Civil War Cincinnati Zouave Guard, Co. D 2nd Ohio Volunteers, and a framed modern copy photo of a member of that unit accompanies the jacket, but that unit seems to have used a blue cuff chevron this jacket does not show. Other units are possible, but bullion braid rather than worsted wool trim suggests a post-Civil War date, as do extensive machine sewing and a machine-stitched rectangle in the left sleeve that likely once secured a maker label. Uniforms and drill inspired by French-Algerian light infantry took hold in America in the late 1850s. Zouave units remained popular in state forces through the 1870s and use in drill exhibitions extended long after. CONDITION: Good to very good. No moth damage. Seams secure, but bullion trim has surface losses overall and is detached in places. This displays very well.
