Conceived in India during the glory days of the British Empire, the Shakespeare knife was designed by Henry Shakespear who is a man with an illustrious and adrenaline filled history. Shakespeare was a British Cavalry Officer, having served a lengthy career in the Bengal Army in which he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel and Commandant of the Nagpore Irregular Cavalry. He was also an author and a dangerous game hunter. His knife was manufactured by the renowned English sword and gun maker, Wilkinson of London, England. The knife features an 8" convex and double-edged shallow spearpoint blade with a deep fuller. The blade is marked "WILKINSON / PALL MALL / LONDON" which is etched in a small vignette just above the handle. The handle features a hand-checkered wood grip which is held in place by 3 pins on each side. The knife is complete with its leather covered wood scabbard that features a metal catch which secures the knife in the scabbard. The scabbard leather is checkered much like the grips. CONDITION: The blade is bright but exhibits scattered areas of pitting and spotting. edges and tip remain sharp. The grips remain secured to the handle but there is a significant split down the seam. The leather scabbard exhibits creasing and light areas of leather loss and there is a break in the tip which reveals the inside. Catch functions properly. Frog exhibits heavy creasing. Overall good.
