Lot consists of: (A) Post Mexican War pre-Civil War Ames Model 1840 heavy cavalry saber better know as the "Wristbreaker". This particular example was produced by Ames and is complete with its scabbard. The blade is plain and devoid of decoration only being marked by the maker on either side the ricasso. The obverse ricasso is marked "AMES MFG. CO. / CHICOPEE / MASS / 1853" and "US / A.D.K." on the reverse ricasso. The sword features a heavy brass guard which is followed by a grooved wood handle. The hefty iron scabbard is equally plain and features 2 ring mounts. CONDITION: The blade is bright and exhibits scattered areas of light pitting and spotting as well as chips along the edge. The grip is missing its leather covering and brass wire. Guard has darkened with age. The scabbard exhibits a chocolate patina with scattered blemishes and oxidation. Overall good. (B) US Federal Period eagle head pommel sword. The sword features a curved blade with a deep fuller and a nitre blue lower section that is decorated with gilded panoplies and scrollwork on both sides. The handle features a brass crossguard with knucklebow and a bone grip topped off by an eagle head pommel. The sword is complete with the remnants of its leather scabbard. CONDITION: The blade exhibits heavy areas of surface rust and pitting. The bluing and gilded decorations are preserved, but are flanked by areas of rust. The brass components of the handle appear to have once been gilded, exhibiting scattered evidence, but have since been muted and now reflect a gray patina. The backstrap has slightly separated from the bone grip. The scabbard is in several pieces but both metal mounts remain. Overall fair. JLD
