Starr Model 1858 double action percussion revolver, manufactured from 1858 to 1860 with approximately 3000 manufactured total. 6" round barrel in .44 caliber rifled with dovetailed blade front sight. 1 piece plain walnut grips. Grips bear "GKC" (George K. Charter) inspector cartouche on either side. Matching serial numbers observed on frame inside hammer channel and on cylinder. All other major parts are marked with "C" US inspector condemnation markings. During the period, other revolvers, also bearing "C" condemnation markings were occasionally bought by civilians and ended up on the battlefield regardless of not passing military inspection. Guns could be condemned for a wide variety of reasons. CONDITON: Very good for its age, with iron assemblies mostly turned a brown patina with minor storage and handling marks throughout, and areas of bright original bluing on left and right sides of frame. Grips are strong as cleaned with cartouches visible and areas of wear at high edges. Mechanically fine. Bore is frosted with well defined rifling and abrasion halfway down bore from use with corrosive black powder. PROVENANCE: From the Rich Guckes collection. TON
