These rifles were manufactured between 1862-1865 for a total production of about 12,500 rifles. Unfortunately, due to manufacturing setbacks, almost all of these rifles arrived too late to be issued to troops (although it was an extremely well built and well designed rifle for its time). 33” round blued barrel in .58 caliber with 7 groove rifling, military multi leaf rear sight, and blade front. Barrel is complete with saber bayonet lug on right side. Barrel is dated 1863 near breech with typically seen “VP” proof on left side and “STEEL R.K.A.” just above wood line. Color case hardened lock is marked “REMINGTONS” / “ILION, N.Y.” with US armory eagle over “U.S.” ahead of hammer with lock dated behind hammer. 1 piece plain walnut stock with brass furniture in 2 barrel band rifle configuration with sling swivels at front barrel band and trigger guard and US marked military buttplate. Stock is complete with brass implement compartment on right side. Stock bears “BH” and “HDJ” cartouches both on left side in rectangles. CONDITION: Very good, with an attractive amount of the original bluing remaining on barrel with minor storage marks throughout and markings sharp. Lock has turned an even brown patina. Stock is excellent with minor handling marks and cartouches lightly worn but legible. Mechanically fine. Bore is dark with well-defined rifling. TON
