Manufactured by the Strong Fire Arms Co. of New Haven Connecticut, the premier maker of salute and signal cannons during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It features a large 28" bronze barrel marked above breech "MANF'D/THE STRONG FIRE ARMS/CO/NEW HAVEN, CONN./U.S.A." with the correct Federal style eagle. Standard pivoting breech action with manual extractor chambered for 1 - 1/2" size blank shells. Cannon is mounted on a very unusual wooden field style carriage with brass mounts and 31" diameter spoked wheels with iron tires. CONDITION: Good. Bronze components exhibit a pleasing darkening patina with markings light and some pitting. Carriage has alligatoring and chipping as well, with both wheel hubs cracked but still serviceable. Dark bore. Mechanics function correctly. Trunnion covers are not present. This attractive and imposing signal cannon in uncommon field configuration presents well and would make an excellent addition to any collection! BAS
CORRECTION: The cannon is resting on a non-matching field style carriage with very unusual brass mounts and 31" diameter spoked wheels with iron tires.
