Circa 1820 US officer's eagle head pommel sword. The sword features a 28 - 1/8" straight blade decorated for about half its length with a fire blued panel. The panel is complimented by engraved military, patriotic, and foliate motifs that are highlighted with gilt. The decorations feature foliate scrolls, followed by a panoply of arms, ending with winding scrolls just above the ricasso. The obverse scroll is marked "W.H. Horstmann & Sons" while the scroll on the reverse is marked "Philadelphia". The hilt features a crossguard with a large down turned counterguard which exhibits a patriotic spread winged eagle with shield a shield protecting its breast. Ovular quillon and a small turned up counterguard on the reverse complete the crossguard, which is connected to a chain knucklebow and leads to the sleek open mouth eagle head pommel with delineated feathers. The feathers lead to a fluted ivory grip, which sits between the pommel and a plain brass ferrule. CONDITION: The blade retains some of its original fire blued finish, but some of the decorations are molested by pitting. A dark gray patina is observed towards the tip. The brass components of the hilt exhibit an untouched mellow patina with scattered dark spots from aging. The grip exhibits light handling wear. Eagle head pommel and guard are loose and produce a slight wiggle when handled. Overall good. JLD
